Google Video Store

The Google Video website now shows free and paid videos. I’m browsing the store and so far I saw listed series like CSI, NOVA, Star Trek Voyager, Star Trek Deep Space Nine, The Twilight Zone and MacGyver! Still not all the series listed there have episodes available.

Gregarius

gregarius.jpg

I just ditched Google Reader and installed a personal web based RSS/RDF/ATOM reader / aggregator named Gregarius.

Gregarius runs on Apache/PHP/MySQL or SQLite and it’s great. Simple and functional as every web 2.0 app should be, it provides AJAX powered item tagging, categories, folders, filters, full text search, support for themes and plugins and a flexible configuration interface.

Forget about other subscription web based rss readers, with Gregarius you can keep your feeds always updated and independent for others. And forget about privacy issues, with this solution no one will know what you’re reading.

Monday Night

Looks like Sean Egan collaboration with Google is showing results at CES, the guys over Orrentdesign.com got these sweet photos of Google Talk with buddy icons.

Over ArsTechnica, a nice article debunking some rumors on the Nintendo Revolution controller and leaving others in the open. I just hope that the Revolution controller doesen’t become another “stylus”.

Still on Nintendo, someone over there is thinking like George Lucas on Star Wars. With the latest Metroid installment, Metroid Prime: Hunters, Nintendo is hoping that the newly announced bounty hunters will become so popular, they get their own spin-off games.

News coming from CES Sony booth say that Sony has announced the introduction of higher capacity Memory Stick PRO Duo media. Dubbed “Gigabyte Life”, the exhibit gives us a look at the 4GB and 8GB memory sticks that will be showing up later on 2006. No prices were announced but this might mean a huge price drop on the current 1GB and 2GB versions.

Still on Sony: A new and improved version of Connect is announced for March, promissing a new multimedia source for the PSP.
“The Connect service will enable you to download hundreds of videos, games, and TV shows as well as films and other content. You’ll even be able to browse from a wide selection of books.”
Word is that the PSP Media Manager will be updated to a iTunes like app and take advantage of this new Connect.

The Unix Alternative

Last week in my quest for something near a Linux / Unix environment I mentioned the UnxUtils and Cygnwin. Today I found out that AT&T RnD department has this cool Unix package that allows UNIX applications to be built and run on Win32 platforms.

UWIN has a set of libraries that emulate a UNIX environment using the UNIX API and includes the Korn Shell as well as other known GNU utilities (like ls, sed, tail, etc…).

I’m testing this package later on, and compare it to the other 2 solutions I have installed on my windows box.

Nintendo

I love Nintendo.
Really. I’m not being ironic. All my consoles are Nintendo except for the PSP. I just don’t like the DS, sorry Nintendo, for me the DS should have been the next big step in the console evolution. The same you are doing for the Revolution I was expecting for the DS. Anyway, I might buy a DS one day, if the price lowers to near 100€. As for the Gameboy Micro… man… I can’t even comment on that.

Anyway, last year BBC3 aired in-depth report on the inner-workings of Nintendo. Really a must for all die hard Nintendo fans. Check it here.

Worms for PSP

Not a new worm virus or anything like that, but a new Worms game from THQ.
This is probably one of the funniest games I ever played. Check the screenshots:

Another one to add to the list…

By the way, if you like games like Worms check Gunbound. It’s free and it plays just like worms but it’s online. You can buy items with the gold you earn from battles and with real money.

Just for fun

  • If you are a true road warrior you’ll love this. The true mobile mouse, bluetooth ready!
  • Skype 2.0 is gold and supports video. No one seems to have noticed this, looks like the fuss around Skype has died since eBay bought the company.
  • I found another reason to dislike the Nintendo DS… (I might bite my tongue if he says the same thing about the PSP)
  • I’ve been playing around with Lussumo Vanilla, a new web forum PHP / MySQL based and 100% GPL. It supports extensions and themes. A nice project that has lots of potencial.
  • To finish with style, one very very true song - The System Administrator Song

Microsoft response to iTunes: Urge

Looks like Bill is after another market share. This time he’s after a big piece of the pie that belongs to Apple.
Urge will feature MTV content for media centers and portable media players but NOT for iPod.

But not directly related to this topic but also in the same article, this is my favorite part:

Microsoft indicated that later this year, it will start selling external HD-DVD drives, which will enable users to watch high definition DVDs via their Xbox machines and also allow greater interactivity. At the outset, the new drive will be only for movies and does not include games.

Great! You spend 400 in a console that only reads DVDs and then you buy the HD-DVD drive for how much?? And no games will be supported! Way to go Microsoft.

Dump

Dunno wich Linux distrib is the best for you? Check the Linux Distribution Chooser.

Speaking about Linux, In my daily basis I’ve been blessed to work with Window$ at full time. Sometimes I have to retrieve and edit information from several text files and logs in order to troubleshoot problems that occurr. Not having a single Linux box in our network (except the proxy), I was in need to find utilities like tail, grep and other gnu/linux utils that worked in win32. I could install Cygwin, but I rather have something native instead of an emulated environment, so I installed UnxUtils - native Win32 ports of the GNU utilities I was looking for. It works like a charm!

Other app that I call essential is UltraEdit 32. Although it’s paid software, UltraEdit has great feautures.

Skipping to another topic: Reading.

I would like to share with you two excelent pieces of tech literature. One is a free book on Asterisk provided by OReilly , the other is a tutorial on Subnets.
