The “Wiikend”

As the majority knows, the Wii was released on Portugal last Friday (the 8th). I got to do some ‘xmas shopping on the same day and saw some units on sale but no games whatsoever, no Zelda, no Wii Play, none. I won’t lie and say that it didn’t crossed my mind to buy one, even after my last post about the subject. I’ve always been a great fan of Nintendo, but the Wii has not yet prove it’s value for me. As I said before, Zelda TP seems a great game but it’s not the game that will make me buy the console. A few hours later, the Wii’s I saw on sale were gone. A good sign perhaps, but then again, there were still some units remaining on day one.

I went on with my shopping spree. Bought a TV and, on my perfect mind, a PS2. An old game is a new game if you never played it and that was my idea when I bought the PS2. Playing MG3 Subsistence, Final Fantasy X and X-2 was a great experience. Now I get to play great games at a reduced priced (you can get PS2 games at 15€ to 60€), and have a chance to really find out what I’ve been missing all these years. If you are a true gamer you can’t side with a brand or with a system or you’ll loose excellent games. I bought R-Type Final (15€), the last R-Type title ever made, and man, it’s great (but I’ll expand this in another post). I’m not sorry I got the PS2 instead of Wii, time will tell the fate of the new gen consoles but for now I’ll enjoy the “new” games PS2 has to offer. Now excuse me while me and Snake find our way out of the Russian jungle…

Virtual Consoles

The Virtual Console concept has made it’s debut on the new-gen consoles. PS3, Wii, 360, all have proven that VC brings additional value to gamers. It’s great to play a perfect port of Super Mario Bros on the Wii or Tekken 3 on the PSP (although you still need a PS3 :(), but wouldn’t it be even great to have a VC for the Nintendo DS? Nintendo could release a memory cart for the DS and allow NES and SNES (and N64 who knows) games to be downloaded so we could play them on the go. Sony announced games from SNK, PC Engine and Megadrive (Genesis for the USA readers) to be played on the PS3, but I would kill (not really) for a VC version of Sonic or PC Kid on the PSP.

My point: Virtual Consoles are great, but it can be ever better on portable consoles. Think about it Sony and Nintendo!

Why I’m not getting a Wii this Xmas

Snake

  • Zelda is the only game that interests me.
  • There are no good 3rd party titles available.
  • Can’t enjoy VC games ’cause I have no broadband connection at home (yet). :(
  • PS3

The only “living room” console I own is a Gamecube which, by the way, is one of the greatest consoles still around. Being able to play Gameboy games on the telly is priceless ;), but I digress. As other GC owners know, there were many excellent 3rd party titles that never reached the Cube. I’m a big fan of the Metal Gear and Final Fantasy series (among other titles), and I still want to play those games. I could wait for the PS3, but I’m not risking retro compatibility issues and paying 600€ without knowing the future of the platform. PS2 has a large game library and excellent titles and both, console and games, are at a very affordable price. That’s why I’m getting a PS2 this Xmas, I’ve already bought Metal Gear 3 Subsistence it’s now only a matter of time until I buy a PS2 :D.

Skuter???

In my teenage years we had Scooter, the guys had a few cool tracks that made into the dance tops, but today I came across Skuter.

What can we call this? Neo-Folk-Techno or like we like to say in portugese, martelinhos pimba?

Be afraid, be very afraid…

Tip: Turn off the sound 20 seconds after the video starts and enjoy the view ;)

More than meets the eye…

Follow me on this one:

Nintendo DS Lite - 152,99€
Opera DS - 40€
Nintendo MP3 Player
- 30€

Total - 222,99€ - Price source Fnac.pt

Sony PSP - 199,99€ - It plays mp3 (and other audio / video formats), surfs the web and has a myriad of other features out of the box, no add ons required except for the memory card which I didn’t contemplate in both consoles.

Now… who’s the evil one??? ;) Ah, And next year, if you want to play DVDs on your recently acquired Wii, prepare yourselves to buy another one, maybe a Wii Lite… Nintendo is really getting there.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII TGS 2006 Trailer

Bringing back FFVII like this will probably be the best thing for PSP owners in 2007!
