Web 2.0 is probably the most well known case, but now Sony’s Phil Harrison seem to have coined the term with his presentation at GDC.

Game 1.0, as he explained, was the generation of home consoles (like the NES, Megadrive, and PlayStation) systems where the game experience was offered on a disc or cartridge and without any sort of network connectivity.

Game 2.0 was defined by systems like the PlayStation 2, Xbox and 90s PC where the game experience and content was largely static, though the systems were connected through the Internet allowing a multiplayer playing experience.

Game 3.0 is mainly defined and influenced by the of Web 2.0 and all the community and social movement as well as the PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360. This are systems are not only connected but where creating experiences are created for themselves and for each other.

Two excellent examples of Gaming 3.0 applications are the upcoming service from Sony called Home and Media Molecule‘s Little Big Planet.

I made a post about Home a few days ago, since then several videos have popped on the web explaining better the concept and the upcoming features. Home takes on some Second Life features, it’s a full 3D world in which your avatar (created by you after adjusting a few sliders and picking a bunch of clothes “a la” RPG). Home, as the name clearly explains, is a giant home where you stroll by several rooms, a mix of pre-designed and user-selected content. Unlike Second Life, the world is not entirely built by users but some areas are fully customizable, like your apartment. You can change the furniture, the wallpaper, the TV, etc… and a lot more, all stuff you can buy on the PS Home Store. Movies and music stores on your PS3 can be played on a TV or Stereo and you can invite other users for a party at your apartment or even create rooms to play games like a poker room or a Buzz room. You can stream audio and video from the network and from other users. Interaction with other users unlocks more items and takes a big place in the experience. Outside of your apartment you can chat with other users (text or even audio), play arcade games and show your game trophies in a special room for that purpose. Word is that the beta testing begins in April and it will be available free of charge on the PS Store.

Little Big Planet is so far one of the most interesting games announced for the PS3, and unfortunately won’t be available for the European PS3 launch. LBP is a fun game with an excellent physics engine that takes a big role on the gameplay. Controlling a sort of stitched-rag-doll (which can be fully customized), you’ll explore, move, create and modify just about anything. Everything in the game is made out of rich textures from real materials and it’s all dynamic. This highly interactive environment features, as I mentioned, mainly a physics driven gameplay, absolutely no scripting, just imagine the endless possibilities that it offers. But it’s better seen than told, so head for the HD movies from the game and drool. Besides the traditional co-operative gameplay, LBP offers the ability to create new levels, share them, comment and rate other user created levels where creativity is the limit.

Gaming 3.0 is coming and it’s opening a whole new experience for gamers that have a new gen system. As for me, I’m still waiting, watching and playing on my old gen systems… Final Fantasy XII has been making my day and I still have plenty of games to finish on this gen.

[tags]Gaming 3.0, Sony, Playstation 3, Home, Little Big Planet, Playstation 2, Wii, Xbox, Xbox 360, Nintendo, Microsoft[/tags]

Nowadays it seems to be a trend to attribute versions to everything.
