R2D2

It was recently announced at CES07 by Nikko (best known for its remote-controlled cars who doesn’t remember the Nikko Turbo Panther?), a DVD projection system and a wireless networked Webcam, both based on our old friend R2-D2.

The R2-D2 Projector is a 50-cm-tall 480p projector and it features built-in speakers, an iPod dock, a memory card slot and an FM transmitter to broadcast audio around your place all this in a fully motorized version of R2-D2. It comes with a Millenium Falcon-shaped remote control, that controls not only the media features but also the projector with it’s three motorized wheeled legs with built-in safety sensors, which prevents R2-D2 from bumping into the furniture. The guys at Nikko did a great job in what concerns aspect, the unit it’s almost a carbon-copy of the real droid model and it sounds just like it, with 11 different sound effects randomly playing when it’s in motion.

The R2-D2 Webcam comes with a Luke Skywalker lightsaber-shaped USB handset for VoIP communications (read Skype), full with lights and sounds. The lightsaber remote also controls the motions of the motorized wireless R2-D2 1,3 megapixels webcam, in option you can also control the unit by software in a pc.

Now for the painful part: Not available until July in the USA, the R2-D2 DVD Projector will retail for $2,500 and the R2-D2 Webcam with the lightsaber USB handset will cost about $350 (no prevision for Europe). I’m tying to believe that someday this items will be available in Europe, until then let me dream…
