The Smart Package Manager project has the ambitious objective of creating smart and portable algorithms for solving adequately the problem of managing software upgrading and installation. This tool works in all major distributions, and will bring notable advantages over native tools currently in use ([tag]APT, APT-RPM, YUM, URPMI[/tag], etc).

I didn’t test the SPM yet but I’m hoping that this might be better than YUM and APT. It would be nice that all the [tag]Linux[/tag] distributions could adopt a standard packaging system… lots of “barriers” could be broken this way.

The features are great, I can’t wait to test it this weekend.

I’ve been using it for a couple of days and has been working ok with the APT and YUM repositories, so far (using FC4). Unlike APT and YUM, it comes with a GUI ($ smart –gui), but it’s not as intuitive as Synaptic (frontend for APT).
