I still say anyone who wants to use a portable console as a music or movie player is insane. 🙂 It’s too big for the former, too small for the latter.

Web browsing may be OK – it’s like a cell phone with a bigger screen. But the other too… it’s like demanding that the console makes coffee, when you can buy a coffee machine for much less, and which actually makes a decent cup. 🙂

Of course, that’s just me being evil. 🙂 And if I want to really be evil, I’d mention one word: games. 😈

Nah, you know the games are not a valid argument 😉 as for the cell phone comparison, well, today most cell phones play media files, so I guess the price difference is all in the stylus support lololol

I think this is related to my laptops post: it’s a problem of conflicting goals.

To play movies, you need a large screen; the larger, the better. For it to be portable, however, it must be small. For listening to music, you also want it as small as possible. To play games, it can’t be too small, or else your hands will be too big to grab it comfortably, and, like with the movies, you’ll need a magnifying glass to look at the screen.

A browser is simpler, because mostly you will use it for reading text; I’ve used a Nokia 6630 to do it for years (and also as an ebook reader), so the DS (or the PSP) are perfectly fine as web browsers.

But, to play movies, I’d want something bigger than both.

To listen to music, I’d want something smaller than both.

This is just me, though. 🙂 Looking at my DS forum, it seems many people also want to turn their DSs into PDAs or laptops. 🙂

That also happens with the PSP. It’s sold as a console and media player, but people want keyboards, tv connectivity, toasters and microwave oven all in one. With all the add ons people require the consoles loose their portable factor.

The Opera DS requires that you use a memory expansion on the GBA slot. That’s cool if you just want to use the browser, but if you want to listen some tunes, you got to remove the memory expansion and insert the mp3 player… and it sticks out like normal GBA carts, and worse part is, you have to connect the headphones to the jack in the cart 🙁 I know ’cause I have a Play-Yan. That thing only works well on a GBMicro.

The PSP is having the same problem with the GPS and the Camera…

When PSP was launched i confess i was really amazed with it, but now i think it’s kind off … expensive? The 199€ tag doesn’t means a lot to me because you only get the console and nothing more (well, you get the charger :)) … A memory stick with some “decent speed” and 1 GB costs about 60/70€, plus one good pair of headphones that costs about 15/20€, and you already got about 280€ spend …

Ok, you got video, sound and games, and for me that’s good (I’ve already watched a full movie on it and i was happy with it, nice screen :)) …

You can get a 2gb card by 50€, just look around before you buy. You spend 150€ on a DS and you get the ac adapter as well 😉
