Aptana

After getting to know about Aptana‘s existence via João Pedro Pereira, I decided to take a look and install it on my Ubuntu box.

The instalation runs smoothly, but there’s some tricks here and there that should have been documented. So, here’s a little tutorial for the rescue:

  • Download the install file from here.
  • Open a terminal window
  • Aptana has dependencies so you’ll need to install Mozilla and libswt3.1
  • sudo apt-get install mozilla
  • sudo aptitude install libswt3.1-gtk-java
  • Chmod the install file to make it executable – chmod +x Aptana_IDE_Setup.bin
  • Excecute the file – ./Aptana_IDE_Setup.bin
  • Now, the installation should be easy, just read and answer the wizard’s questions until it’s finished
  • Aptana needs a environment variable set for mozilla so we’ll have to code ourselfs a little script in order to set the variable evert time we need to run Aptana and not just once inside the terminal window.

    touch aptana
    sudo gedit aptana

    Now copy this

    #/usr/bin
    export MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME=/usr/lib/mozilla
    ~/Aptana/aptana

    and save the file.

  • Chmodit so it can be executed. – chmod 755 aptana
  • Now you can copy it to /bin – sudo cp aptana /bin/

You’re ready to go! You can even create a menu launcher and use this nifty icon I made.

Toasty!!!!

Hello,

As part of the Linux-NTFS project, I’m happy to announce my contribution
to ntfsmount and libntfs which resulted ntfs-3g, a read-write ntfs driver,
capable for unlimited file creation and deletion.

The driver was successfully tested very exhaustively for a longer period of
time by many ways and methods, creating and destroying millions of files and
directories on newly created images, and on over 40 real, very diverse NTFS
images collected over the last four years.

The README file is copied below which includes more general, performance and
quality information with answers and future plans.

Please make a backup of your NTFS volume by ntfsclone and try to reproducible
break ntfs-3g, if you can. If you are able to do so then please let us know,
preferable providing your NTFS metadata image, if it couln’t be reproduced by
other ways.

The driver can be downloaded from

http://mlf.linux.rulez.org/mlf/ezaz/ntfs-3g-20070714-BETA.tgz

Please note that I’m leaving for an over 5,000 km long Far North and Arctic
Ocean advanture on Sunday morning (European time) and won’t be able to read
and answer emails for almost a month (no, I’m not escaping, I plan to come
back alive ;). Originally I planned to fix all the minor issues listed below
but no more time left for me and I think it’s better to release now, in case
I would get lost somewhere on the road 😉 Well, actually I hope that most
issues will be resolved when I’m back!

Happy testing, problem reporting and coding,

Szaka

Free Linux CDs

Following Canonical’s initiative with Ubuntu, The Linux Store started a similar project. On their website you can order for free some of the most well known Linux distros available.

Ubuntu 6.06 and WPA

Last week after recieving the Ubuntu cds from Canonical as usual, I installed Dapper on my Asus A2 laptop. Installation went fine, except for the same old problem with my SMC 2835 wireless pcmcia card. Once again I had to go through all that process of getting my wireless connection working, but this time I took an alternative road.

– First of all install Automatix, this script will install the NDISWrapper and Gnome NetworkManager packages need to simplify the process.

– If you do a ifconfig you’ll probably see your wireless card listed as eth2, this will change later to wlan0.

– Make sure you have the NDISWrapper installed doing ndiswrapper on a terminal window. If you get a “command not found” error then something went wrong with Automatix, make sure you check the wreless networking packages. If you get an error response from the NDISWrapper that’s fine, it means you have it installed.

– This is one of the most important steps. Ubuntu loads the Prism54 kernel module, but this conflicts with the NDISWrapper, so you’ll have to sudo rmmod prism54 and then sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist and add the line blacklist prism54 to the file and save.

– Reboot.

– Now, download the SMC 2835 Windows XP drivers, unpack and install with Windows Wireless Drivers (System > Administration > Windows Wireless Drivers and then Install New Driver).

– By now your Wireless NIC should be listed as Wlan0 on ifconfig.

– You should have the Gnome NetworkManager applet on the Gnome panel near the clock, click it and choose “Connect to Other Wireless Network” and you’ll see WEP and WPA options. Just enter your Wireless Network SSID and password and you’re done.

You can probably adapt this mini tutorial to another wireless nic so let me know if this works with you.

Google Earth after Picasa

Google Earth for Linux is next inline after the Picasa port.

Picasa, founded in 2001, was purchased by Google in July of 2004, and the photo management tool has seen some extensive use, albeit from Windows users. DiBona indicated that Google made a public committment to begin porting two applications to Linux about a year ago. The other application in this project is Google Earth. Picasa for Linux was announced first simply because it was finished first.

When asked if the additions to WINE would bootstrap Google Earth’s porting progress, DiBona answered in the negative, explaining that Google Earth relied on Qt and GL libraries and code, so additional WINE support would not help. No timeline for that application’s release was revealed at this time.

More info here.

SLAX – Linux in your pocket

  • SLAX Server Edition – Inclui serviços de DNS, DHCP, HTTP, FTP, MySQL, SMTP, POP3, IMAP and SSH prontos a usar.
  • SLAX Popcorn Edition – Uma versão minimalista do SLAX a correr o XFce

The Silence Within

Today’s post is in portuguese. Sorry. I’m in a bad mood.
