Random Saturday Stuff

Yeah, I know, I know… a whole week and more with no posting. Just haven’t been in the mood for it. It’s unusually hot here in Portugal for this time of the year and there’s not much happening of interesting in my life that I find worth of sharing. Nevertheless, here’s some highlights:

I was in my teens when I received a few Aventuras Fantásticas books as a gift. The Fighting Fantasy series was my introduction to the Fantasy and RPG genres… and I was instantly hooked. This was well before I read The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings, but it served as a real gateway into that world.

In Portugal, the books were translated and published by Editorial Verbo, easily recognizable by their distinctive green spines with black lettering.

Fast forward to 2025, and I’m seeing them announced all over social media, now being re-released by Porto Editora. I got so nostalgic that I pre-ordered both volumes! Nostalgia really is a powerful thing, but I don’t mind at all. I genuinely hope these books catch on with kids today.

Sure, playing an RPG through a book might feel a bit clunky to them—but that’s part of the magic!

One of my long-standing hyper focuses has been emergency gear. Over time, I’ve been putting together a bug-out bag for myself and my family, as well as an emergency kit for situations like the blackout we had last month. That experience, in particular, pushed me deeper down several rabbit holes: EDC, emergency kits, survival gear… and of course, YouTube and Amazon haven’t exactly helped with the temptation. Still, I try to make every purchase after careful research and comparison.

One of the more recent additions (well, one of the latest impulse-justified-by-research purchases) is the Wuben E7 flashlight.

The Wuben E7 is surprisingly versatile. Despite its compact size, it delivers a serious amount of brightness, up to 1,800 lumens, thanks to its dual OSRAM P9 LEDs. I mostly use it as a personal flashlight in my main kit. It comes with multiple lighting modes—Turbo, High, Medium, Low, plus Strobe and SOS—making it adaptable to pretty much anything I need.

What really stands out to me is the design. It’s lightweight, feels solid in the hand, and includes both a magnetic base and a clip, which makes hands-free use super convenient. It charges via USB-C and comes with a rechargeable 18350 1100mAh battery, but there’s also the option to use an 18650 with an extension tube if you want longer runtime (must… resist… temptation…).

The build quality is excellent! IP68-rated for water and dust resistance, and it’s tough enough to survive the occasional drop.

While the flashlight itself is reasonably priced, the headband and extension tube are sold separately, so if you want the full setup, you’ll need to factor that into the cost.

Still, all things considered, the E7 is a well-made, flexible flashlight that punches above its size. As long as you’re careful with batteries and mindful of the accessory costs, it’s a fantastic addition to any emergency or EDC setup.

I will, hopefully, write a post to detail my bug-out bag and emergency kits, but neither are yet in a state I consider perfect (wonder if they will ever be…), unlike my EDC stuff that has been top notch. That one is coming soon!

The Fighting Fantasy are such a part of my early teens. I still own the first original eleven books and I fully plan on grabbing some of these new releases.
